Renters Together - Renters Rights Workshop (Security Deposits)

Join us for some yummy eats, excellent company and empowering yourself to have a quality rental experience.

This renters rights workshop will focus on what you need to know about security deposits. Learn what you need to do to ensure that you get your security deposit returned fairly based on Kansas law.

In the event the tenant has concerns that the landlord is not compliant with the law then the tenant’s concerns should be documented. The presentation will explain why it is necessary to document EVERYTHING before moving in, as well as describe best practices of tenants in documenting. The presenter’s goal it to educate tenants of their right to terminate a rental agreement with 5 days notice if the landlord does not deliver the rental unit according to the requirements of K.S.A. 58-2560.

We will also have a Q&A time to help renters troubleshoot current difficulties they may find themselves facing.

Paul Shipp, an attorney from Kansas Legal Services will give the presentation and help answer renter questions.

We will also give updates about the work we are doing together to make housing safer and more affordable for renters in MHK. We are building support for a rental code inspection program to provide accountability for safety standards in rental units.

COMMON RENTER EXPERIENCES:

—unsafe housing conditions

—unfair treatment

—lack of timely repairs

Date With Hate (Westboro Baptist Church)

The Westboro Baptist Church is scheduled to protest the KSU College of Arts and Sciences graduation on May 18th from 7:30 - 8:15am at Bramlage Colosseum. Please join us as we arrive earlier than them around 6:15 am to claim the high ground along the walkway to the northwest entrance to force them as far downhill and away from the graduates, families and friends as possible. We ultimately want to provide a human shield of positivity for those attending a graduation.

Flags, posters, banners and the like with positive messages are strongly encouraged. (Note if you bring helium balloons please do not give to attendees of the graduation as they are not allowed inside the colosseum).

Donuts will be provided for volunteers.

Please reach out to fhhrp@yahoo.com if you have any questions.
